Introduce...

In October 1973, when I was almost sixteen, I took a course in DJ techniques at the 3960 Youth House in Beverlo. During a few weeks we learned the tricks of the trade on Sunday morning. My experience with speaking to an audience through the diction and nomination course came in handy. At that time, the records were all announced and it was quite a challenge to fill up the intros and still let the mix run smoothly. Of the sixteen participants, I quickly became the 'new' DJ for the youth center.

Mixing with Lenco turntables in the early 1970s was done with serrated slip mats. I blocked the mat with weights so that the record remained stationary - over a constantly rotating platter - where I wanted to start them. There was no turn speed control at all at the turntable (= also the Dutch name for DJ at that time) or tone controls per mix channel. It took a lot of practice to master the techniques, but I got a platform in the youth center.

I refined my technique for more than a year and in the meantime I got to know the popular hits and artists. It was also the ideal time to observe an audience's reactions to the music played and to learn how to get them to dance, but especially to keep dancing by building a set with play-list. Turning requests was no problem because the youth club had a large collection of singles and LPs. Mixing them appropriately after each other was another pair of sleeves.

Then suddenly the first assignment came outside: the Chrysostom party from the Sacred Heart College in Heusden, where I went to school. I had no sound and light equipment of my own, no transport and too few records. Nevertheless, I accepted the assignment and with the help of the schoolmates it was a success. The beginning of ... a long career. More than 30 years of experience

In the meantime I have a varied music collection and I know like no other how to combine various styles 'in the mix'. I take care of the performances with or without my own equipment (rent if desired), can vouch for a complete program, as a link between other performances or as a guest DJ for several hours. The period of vinyl is over, CDs are still being worked on, but the step towards digitization has been taken.

DJ Jos the ideal partner for a dazzling dance party.
