History

The Weijer is a beautiful piece of history. It radiates from it. With all the extensions, shortcuts and inside-out walls you can see the time in the building, you can see the character of De Weijer.

That character was born as a small fortified settlement between the Maas and the old Roman highway. Around the year 900, the brave knight Gerlachus van Pont received half a Lordship as a gift from his bride, daughter of the Count of Cuijc. There were several farms, or knightly manors, in that seigneury, including the gem De Wijer (indeed, in the first deeds without an “e”).

Even before Knight van Pont was pleased with his dowry, De Weijer has been inhabited by Christian shepherds for ages. That function is retained, De Weijer was used as a pastor's home until 1606.

Around 1660, De Weijer became the permanent residence of the Boxmeer drossaards, our noble-born administrators. After Drost Johan Baptist, the building came into the possession of the De Raet family, who continued to live there for four generations. Pay particular attention to the beautiful portrait of the grande Dame De Raet from 1824. The painting has a prominent place in the theater café.

After 1844, De Weijer got other residents. Starting with a school for boys, between 1844 and 1865. Then a convent of sisters, who ran the place for more than 100 years. The chapel was built for this group in 1872, which was only raised about 65 years later and equipped with the characteristic tower. In 1934 it was further expanded. Including the beautiful Weijer Hall by architect Charles Estourgie.

In 1974, De Weijer was sold to the Municipality of Boxmeer and transformed into a municipal socio-cultural and educational center.

In 1992 the time has come: the theater! Before that, there were already intimate performances in De Weijerzaal, but with the construction of the professional theater, none of that intimacy has been lost. A beautiful vest pocket theater for Boxmeer and the crowning glory of the De Weijer cultural center.

Ons prachtige, historische pand heeft een theater, grand-café, kapel en een restaurant. Historie

De Weijer is prachtig stukje historie. Dat straalt ervan af. Met alle aanbouwsels, sluiproutes en binnenstebuitenmuren zie je de tijd terug in het gebouw, je ziet het karakter van De Weijer.

Dat karakter is geboren als kleine versterkte nederzetting tussen de Maas en de oude Romeinse heerbaan. Rond het jaar 900 krijgt de koene ridder Gerlachus van Pont een halve Heerlijkheid cadeau bij zijn bruid, dochter van de Graaf van Cuijc. In die Heerlijkheid lagen verschillende hoeven, of ridderhofsteden, waaronder het pareltje De Wijer (inderdaad, in de eerste akten nog zonder “e”).

Nog voordat ridder van Pont verblijd wordt met zijn bruidsschat is De Weijer al tijden bewoond door christelijke herders. Die functie blijft behouden, De Weijer is tot 1606 gebruikt als pastoorswoning.

Rond 1660 wordt De Weijer vaste woonplek van de Boxmeerse drossaards, onze weledelgeboren bestuurders. Na drost Johan Baptist komt het pand in bezit van de familie De Raet, die er vier generaties blijft wonen. Let vooral op het prachtportret van de grande dame De Raet uit 1824. Het schilderij heeft een prominent plekje in het theatercafé.

Na 1844 krijgt De Weijer andere bewoners. Te beginnen met een leerschool voor jongens, tussen 1844 en 1865. Daarna een klooster van zusters, die er ruim 100 jaar de boel bestieren. Voor dit gezelschap wordt in 1872 de kapel gebouwd, die overigens zo’n 65 jaar later pas is verhoogd en voorzien van het karakteristieke torentje. In 1934 is er nog eens flink uitgebreid. Onder andere met de prachtige Weijerzaal van architect Charles Estourgie.

In 1974 wordt De Weijer verkocht aan de Gemeente Boxmeer en omgetoverd tot gemeentelijk sociaal-cultureel en educatief centrum.

In 1992 is het zover: het theater! Daarvoor waren er al intieme voorstellingen in De Weijerzaal, maar met de bouw van het professionele theater is er mooi niks van die intimiteit verloren gegaan. Een prachtig vestzaktheater voor Boxmeer en de kroon op het cultureel centrum De Weijer.
